Time to blow the whistle on alcohol sports sponsorship

Time to blow the whistle on alcohol sports sponsorship

Report from Alcohol Focus Scotland and SHAAP on research from Stirling University's Institute for Social Marketing and Health  illustrates the extent, nature and frequency of alcohol sponsorship in Scottish football and rugby. A key finding is the wraparound nature of alcohol branding at big events, making it impossible especially for children to avoid seeing alcohol references.

Recommendations:

  • The Scottish Government should end alcohol sponsorship of professional sport
  • Restrictions on alcohol sport sponsorship should be comprehensive and robust
  • A rigorous and independent monitoring and enforcement programme should accompany sport sponsorship restrictions
  • Sport sponsorship restrictions should form part of a broader strategy to address alcohol marketing
